Our body is amazing, and detox at intervals keeps it amazing! The benefits of detox to our body are inexhaustible. However, in this article, we will take a look at 10 reasons to carry out a detox.

Our body deals with constant waves of harmful toxins from within and without, and it still keeps on ticking. The body is not invincible though. So, I consider it only right that we give our bodies some help!

Let’s take a brief look at toxins from outside and within the body.

Toxins From Outside The Body

  • We inhale them.

This includes household cleaning products, air fresheners, carpets, paints, glues, cigarette smoke and many more.

  • We swallow them in our food and water.

Considering the food we eat, including fruits and vegetables. They are chemicalised. And with the current state of our environment, everywhere is toxic

  • We absorb them through our skin.

Consider the clothes you wear, the bed sheets you sleep on and the towels you rub your skin with. Have they all been cleaned with detergents? Are these detergents powerful and toxic?

Scientists estimate that you carry at least 700 toxins in your body, most of which have not been well-studied.

Toxins Generated Within The Body

For some of us, the toxins that our body creates are a bigger problem.

  • Your Metabolism & Toxins

When we burn carbs or proteins or fats for energy, this process creates byproducts that the body must treat like toxins and eliminate. Burning proteins can be inefficient and toxic but even the cleanest burning carbs leave residues.

  • Incomplete Digestion

You can eat the purest food in the world, but if you eat too much of it, or you don’t chew your food to begin the digestive process properly, you will create a lot of waste that must be taken care of.

You can create poor digestion by combining food poorly. Some foods like proteins need a high acid level to begin digestion while carbohydrates start with a more alkaline environment. Eating poor combinations creates gas and toxins in the digestive tract.

Some people just can’t properly digest gluten products and grains. If they continue to eat large quantities of these foods like everyone else, they continuously deal with toxins and inflammation, disrupting their blood sugar and insulin levels and leaving them overweight.

10 amazing benefits of detox

Now that we have considered the two ways toxins are found in our bodies, let’s proceed to know why these toxins need to be removed from our bodies.

There are several ways to carry out detox and many different types of detox diets. Each one will certainly give you slightly different results.

No matter which method you choose, the benefits of detoxing can’t be underestimated.

Let’s take a quick look at 10 ways a detox can benefit you.

1. Remove toxins from the body

Long-term exposure to toxins (environmental pollutants, cancer-causing chemicals, preservatives, pesticides, heavy metals, and industrial waste) affects our metabolism, behaviour, immune system, and leads to disease. They are stored in tissues and cells throughout the body, including the brain, often for years

2. Prevent chronic disease

Environmental toxins are responsible for many cancers, neurological diseases, heart disease, strokes… you name it. Our bodies do have a built-in detox function to deal with these dangers, but those systems are constantly overloaded! Detoxing assists and improves what our bodies are trying to do naturally.

3. Enhance the immune system function

Detoxing takes some of the workloads off your organs so they can do a good job of shielding your body from illness. A compromised immune system makes us vulnerable to colds and flu, affecting our quality of life and productivity. Regular detoxing helps absorb much-needed nutrients faster which strengthens immune system function and fights off infection.

4. Lose and manage weight

Toxins affect the body’s natural ability to burn fat, leading to weight gain. Diabetes, heart disease, and high blood pressure are directly linked to weight issues. Detoxing rids the body of toxins stored in fat cells and increases metabolism. Detox can help with long term weight management

5. Slow premature ageing

Detoxing rids the body of free radicals and heavy metals partially responsible for ageing. It helps to increase nutrient absorption, including antioxidants and vitamins that help fight oxidative stress.

6. Improve the quality of life

Simply put, our bodies don’t function very well when they’re loaded with toxins. We may have joint pain, headaches, digestive disorders, sleep problems, and lack of energy. Detoxing rids the body of toxins, hence bringing comfort to the body.

7. Increase in energy

Detoxing takes away caffeine and sugar that cause energy crashes, leaving you with more stable energy to engage in the day’s activities. You will have more mental, physical, and emotional energy after detoxing. People tend to sleep better and need less of it.

8. Improve skin quality

Diet and environmental toxins undeniably affect the skin. If your diet isn’t healthy, you’ll still experience skin problems, even if you use the most expensive skincare products and therapy. Detoxing improves acne, and strengthens hair and nails, and gives us a natural, healthy glow.

9. Mental and emotional clarity

When the body’s systems are aligned, a shift also occurs with our mental and emotional states. We can deal with more when we’re clear and grounded. We can make better decisions, analyze accurately, and see things differently. Depression may be eased and memory may be improved as a result of detoxification. For clearer thoughts and better memory, detoxing is the way to go.

10. Restore balance to our body's systems

Our digestive, nervous, and hormonal systems were designed to work together to achieve optimum health. This is what our bodies want to do! When we overload them with toxins and unhealthy foods, these systems don’t work as well as they should and we get sick. Detoxing brings balance back and helps our systems function properly again.

Now that you know the 10 amazing benefits of detox, there are two things to consider before you begin your detox plan;

The first step is to avoid toxins being consumed from the environment

This involves being AWARE and reading labels of foods in packages.

If this sounds boring, I understand. Luckily, this inconvenient attention to detail decreases over time as you start learning the purest food sources. I rarely read labels as I rarely buy packaged foods. I mostly eat whole food which I call Real Food.

Each and every second 310 Kg of toxic chemicals are released into our air, land, and water by industrial facilities around the world.

The next step is Periodic Detoxes

There are hundreds of different approaches and interpretations of a detox. My criteria/recommendations for detox are:

  • To give the digestion system a break. This means you eat easily digestible foods during the break. Reduce the consumption of grains, proteins, fats, and gluten products. And increase the intake of fruits and vegetables.
  • Choose foods to support the detox process. For example, fibre and pectin help cleanse the bowel. Eat specific foods that feed and energize the cleansing organs of the liver, kidney and skin.
